Vancouver based designer Ryan KcKillop has been interested in the world of fashion since he was a youngster making clothes for Cabbage Patch dolls. As Ryan got bigger, so did his desire to be more bold and creative.
Ryan hosted fashion shows in high school, attended design school in Toronto and studied and worked in London, UK and New York City to learn more about the art and science of fashion. Ryan returned for Vancouver, took some time away from design and is now back and ready for a new challenge.
“Design comes naturally to me,” said McKillop U/W founder, Ryan McKillop, as he passionately recounted how his business has grown from making formal dresses to mens underwear.
The McKillop U/W product line is targeted to gay men in their 30′s and 40′s and come in two distinct styles – jockstraps and pouches.
“Change too much and you’ll loose loyal customers,” Ryan says. Although the designs essentially remain the same, things like fabric, material and colour change as each new collection rolls out.
All new collections must meet Ryan’s basic criteria: “I must like it before it goes to market,” Ryan said in a very serious tone.
As for the future of the business, “I’m not getting into tighty-whities, at least not right now.”
Ryan is currently focused on rolling out next year’s collection and expanding his distribution channels through e-tailors (online retailers). Long-term plans include developing new strategic alliances and competing in the strong global market.
“I stand behind my product,” Ryan proudly exclaimed. “If you’re going to buy, then you’ll buy.”
So where can you buy McKillop U/W? You can purchase from a number of online e-tailers including Top Drawers, or in Vancouver, BC at Top Drawers on Denman Street and Ultra Love on Davie Street.
